It's a real simple solution that works very well for us. It does exactly what we needed—it's a solid product that we never have any issues with.
Introduction
Payzone Ireland is one of the country's largest payments businesses, processing 83 million transactions a year both online and in person across 4,000 retail locations, an online platform, and the Payzone app. With backup costs escalating and an ISO 27001 accreditation in progress, the promise of Absolute Immutability, seamless Veeam integration, and on-premises control led Payzone to Object First.
Challenges
Payzone ran Veeam to LTO tape across three sites for over a decade before moving one site to S3 cloud storage. Both approaches created serious operational challenges:
- Heavy manual overhead: Weekly tape rotation and data center visits consumed time a seven-strong IT team could not spare.
- Escalating, unpredictable costs: Cloud charges rose sharply and continuously.
- Retention compromises: The only realistic way to control cloud spend was to keep fewer backups than the business wanted.
- No immutability: Neither tape nor standard cloud storage protected backup data against alteration or deletion.
Solution
Payzone aimed to stay on Veeam, return backup data to its own data centers, and secure predictable costs without adding to its IT team's workload. It chose Object First's on-premises backup storage appliance for its Veeam specialisation, native immutability, and full physical control of data, deploying it almost entirely in-house within weeks.
Results
Object First allowed Payzone to resolve all key challenges:
- Absolute Immutability protects backup data from alteration or deletion, with zero access to perform destructive actions.
- Simplified audits, as data now sits within Payzone's own data centers.
- Improved recovery times on the previous cloud storage, achieved via modest inter-site link upgrades, not a dedicated line.
- Predictable, fixed costs across the contract term, with no need to monitor storage spend.
- Reduced manual workload, with no tapes to rotate, transport, or hand to offsite storage.
- Zero support tickets since deployment.
