I could write another introduction here about just how much AI is transforming the world, the tech space, and everything in between. But I’d much rather ask a question that’s been burning in my mind:
How much is AI actually simplifying things—and how much is it giving us the illusion of simplicity?
The illusion of simplicity—and why it’s dangerous
Don’t get me wrong: AI is transforming everything—from education, to healthcare, and more. And it’s making many of our lives simpler, in a sense. Who still prints directions or reads the manual?
But realistically, the only thing AI is simplifying is interaction. It’s not making underlying systems any less complex—it’s just improving ease of use. The systems we use are getting more complex, but we just don’t see it. That is beneficial in one sense: we’ve all gained easy access to incredibly powerful tools that allow us to do amazing things. But this illusory simplicity is also getting people into hot water.
Picture your own office (or workplace of choice). AI is making everything so simple that anyone can now do almost anything. HR is doing design work. Writers are doing financial planning. And absolutely everyone is writing content (trust me).
But no one understands how any of it works. The autonomy, scale, and lack of guardrails mean individuals can create, generate, and edit whatever they like—and store it wherever they like. That creates inconsistencies, loopholes, and vulnerabilities.
You might say, in this case, that adding simplicity has removed control. And that’s great news for cyber-criminals, who always know exactly what they’re doing, and are in full control of their tools. The vulnerabilities and loopholes we create are the perfect entryways for attacks like AI-powered ransomware.
Real simplicity is a feature, not a flaw
The response is not that we all need to understand the full complexity of every system we use—thankfully. It’s also not that we should all buy the most complex security solutions on the market.
The answer is linked to the aphorism I hinted at before: when you add simplicity, you remove control. It starts with flipping the perspective. Real simplicity is the inverse of the illusion of simplicity I explained before. It’s not a clean surface with more machinery hidden underneath, but a system with far fewer things to break or manipulate.
There’s precedent here. Take automatic transmission in your car, for example: you can’t select from five or more gears anymore—but you’re less distracted, and you no longer run the risk of stalling at a busy crossroads. Or consider your smartphone camera: you can’t play around with different lenses, apertures, or shutter speeds—but you can take great pictures, and you won’t annoy your friends by making them wait 20 minutes for a group shot.
What does that logic tell us about would-be cyber-attackers, AI ransomware attacks, and system vulnerabilities? It tells us that to be simply resilient, we need systems that are simple by default: not because the complexity is hidden, but because there is less anyone can do to create vulnerabilities. That, in turn, means there’s far less an attacker can manipulate. Simplicity is now a security feature.
