Introducing the Mini Ootbi: Secure Backups Without the Rack
Not every IT environment has the infrastructure to support traditional rack-mounted systems. Offices with less square footage, remote branches, and edge locations often lack the space, cooling, or dedicated server rooms required for larger backup appliances. These constraints shouldn’t prevent organizations from achieving secure, immutable backups.
The Ootbi (Out-of-the-Box Immutability) Mini is designed to meet this need, delivering Object First’s smallest appliance produced in a compact, desktop form factor. It’s a practical solution for service providers and IT teams looking to protect data in constrained environments without compromising on security or simplicity.
Ootbi Mini: Making Secure Backups More Accessible
The Mini addresses a common challenge: how to deploy reliable backup infrastructure in places where traditional systems don’t fit. Whether it’s smaller businesses without a server room or a service provider supporting remote clients, the Mini fills the gap with a purpose-built appliance that’s easy to deploy and manage.
It’s especially well-suited for smaller offices, branch locations, and remote environments with limited space or power.
Key Characteristics
The Ootbi Mini maintains the same core benefits as the larger fleet of Ootbi systems—security, simplicity, and power—while adapting to the constraints of smaller environments.
It features a desktop tower form factor, weighs approximately 5–6 pounds, and includes a single power supply. Internally, it houses three disks, offering a quieter and more compact alternative to traditional rack-mounted systems.
Capacity and Models
The Mini is available in three configurations:
- 8 TB: Entry-level option for minimal data footprints
- 16 TB: Balanced capacity for typical deployments
- 24 TB: Higher capacity for larger environments
All models support backup of physical servers and virtual machines and can be mixed and matched with other Ootbi nodes. As data needs grow, Mini units can be evacuated and replaced with larger systems.
Key Benefits
The Mini is affordable, easy to install, and quiet enough for office settings. Its compact sizing allows it to fit into small spaces—closets, shelves, or under desks—without requiring a traditional server rack. In fact, choosing a desktop design over a rack-mounted system was intentional: rack-mounted units are typically more expensive and generate more noise due to large, noisy fans, making them less suitable for office environments.
Local backups enable faster restores compared to cloud-only strategies, and the Mini integrates seamlessly into a 3-2-1 backup architecture. Acquisition is flexible and available via CapEx or consumption-based models, and support is included.
The Ootbi Mini preserves the same level of immutability of the larger appliances, ensuring that security, simplicity, and power remain unchanged even when size is scaled to fit smaller environments.
Sneak Peek: Fleet Manager
Managing multiple Ootbi clusters across different locations can be time-consuming work and fragment efforts. Fleet Manager is designed to simplify this process by providing a centralized dashboard for monitoring distributed Ootbi deployments.
This SaaS-based tool eliminates the need for separate management stations or VPN access to individual clusters. Users can view cluster status, capacity trends, and alerts all from a single interface. Delegated access allows cluster owners to securely share visibility with other users, and authentication integrates with existing systems.
Fleet Manager is ideal for service providers and IT administrators managing multiple environments.
For technical teams working with smaller environments or managing distributed infrastructure, the Ootbi Mini and Fleet Manager are practical, scalable solutions for modern data protection.
