Veeam Backup y Replicación v12.3: Una Actualización Esencial

| 4 min to read

With the recent launch of Veeam Backup & Replication (VBR) version 12.3, Veeam continues to expand its suite of products to better address new threats and strengthen its Data Protection Platform for customers.

This is an essential element in the world of IT backup. As threats to data continuously evolve, Veeam must remain proactive and vigilant in order to effectively counter these potential risks.

Judging by their new update, Veeam is clearly on the offensive.

Advancements in Object Storage and SOSAPI

One of the significant highlights of this update is the advancements in object storage. Veeam has significantly expanded its unique Smart Object Storage API (SOSAPI) to include support for Nutanix AHV, Red Hat Virtualization, and Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager.

As a reminder, SOSAPI is Veeam's solution to some of the challenges of using S3 as backup repositories. It enables capacity reports for the repository, introduces enhanced scale-out backup repository placement policies, and facilitates load balancing on the smart entity level.

If you are using S3 repositories for your Veeam backup repositories, incorporating SOSAPI can greatly improve performance and monitoring capabilities.

Object First's Ootbi S3-compatible backup storage appliance has been designed specifically to leverage all SOSAPI's features. This design not only maximizes the advantages of S3 storage but also offers immutability out of the box.

Automatic Bucket Provisioning

One important thing to note about this release is the addition of automatic bucket provisioning, a feature added only for storage systems that were not originally built for backup data.

As Veeam explains, this enhancement addresses challenges faced by solutions that use dedicated metadata bases for each bucket, particularly when handling exceptionally large buckets that can lead to metadata bloat and significantly affect performance.

Veeam states on page 13, "Some advanced storage solutions perform similar load-balancing natively under the hood." Ootbi by Object First exemplifies such a solution, which does not require this new automatic bucket provisioning feature.

Furthermore, enabling this feature disables SOSAPI, which can negatively affect the performance of advanced storage solutions like Ootbi. In short, it is advisable to refrain from activating this feature when using Ootbi.

Key Enhancements in Compatibility and Security

Nonetheless, the Veeam Backup & Replication 12.3 release still marks an important advancement in data protection.

It includes expanded support for Microsoft Entra ID, improved access management and disaster recovery capabilities, and compatibility with Microsoft Windows Server 2025 and Nutanix AHV for stronger virtualization security.

Plus, the new Veeam Threat Hunter offers advanced malware detection, while indicators of compromise (IoC) detection help quickly spot potential cyber threats.

On top of that, the Veeam Data Cloud Vault gives you secure and cost-effective cloud storage solutions, and Veeam Intelligence brings AI-driven insights to simplify administration.

To Wrap Up

All in all, these upgrades arm organizations with the tools they need to protect their data effectively.
